What is a colonic?

A colonic is also known as colon hydrotherapy, colonic irrigation or colon irrigation.

It is a procedure practised by a therapist to infuse filtered water into your rectum. As the water is cleaning your colon, an evacuation tube carries the waste away. Years of debris, toxic matter and mucus can be removed quickly.

Colonics use a disposable speculum that is gently contoured and designed to pass the waste material into the evacuation tube. The design and set up of the colonics procedure allows for the smooth elimination of water after cleansing the full length of your colon.

This is done by letting approximately 60 litres of water washing the colon during a period of approximately forty-five minutes. As holistic therapists we do not let more than one litre (maximum) of water into the colon at any given time because it is important not to overstretch the colon.

What happens during the colonic session?

You will be laying on a massage table. We use linen and gowns from a medical linen service. During the session you will be laying on your back with your legs bent or on your side. You will insert a speculum (a small piece of plastic tubing) into your rectum and the therapist will connect the speculum with two plastic tubes, that will carry water in and out of your body. The room is reserved for 45 minutes and the session averages 30-40 minutes. After the session you go into the adjacent bathroom to expel any remaining water and waste.

How do I know what to do after the colonic?

Based on your situation, you will receive personal recommendations for what to eat, and what not to eat.  You will also get some general guidelines for healing foods.

Is colon hydrotherapy/colonics painful?

In general there is no pain. There might be moments of discomfort if you are constipated or if your waste is hard and not well digested. Clients report that they might have felt it to be “a little strange,” but after the first time colonics has a relaxing effect on your body. Unless you are very toxic, you will leave feeling lighter, relaxed and refreshed.

Is the session safe?

Yes. Colon hydrotherapy or colonics are safe as long as you provide us with a true and accurate health history. If you have any of the following, we ask that you bring with you a signed note from your primary physician, stating that you are allowed to have colon hydrotherapy/colonics: abdominal hernia, recent abdominal surgery, abdominal tumors, acute liver failure, severe anemia, carcinoma, cardiac conditions, Crohn's disease, dialysis, diverticulitis, fissures and fistulas, hemorrhaging or hemorrhoidecotmy, intestinal perforation, lupus, pregnancy, rectal surgery, renal insufficiency.

Will I be embarrassed during the colonic?

No. You are covered during the entire session. The session takes place in a private room with an adjacent bathroom. During the session, we use “closed system colonic equipment” so there is no smell or uncontained waste materials.

Will I see results the first time?

Most clients will experience positive results the first time, but there are some that will require a few sessions. If you follow the recommendations of what do before the colonic, it will help you have as good of an experience as possible. It is important that you explain to us what you are trying to achieve in terms of your health, so we can guide you properly in terms of how many colonics and how often.

How many times should I come for colonics?

When you are here, the therapist will discuss with you what it is you are trying to achieve. We will try to guide you accordingly. If you want to do a thorough cleanse or are trying to change something you have problems with, we recommend that you have a series of colonics to achieve your goal. If all you want is to feel a little lighter and flatter, maybe one or two is enough. Ultimately it is your choice of what you want to do, we are here to guide you and help you achieve the health goals you have set for yourself. Whatever level you might be on we will do our best to help you proceed.

What kind of water is used?

We use purified and filtered water that also passes through a UV-filter.

What should I know when I set up my first appointment?

When you set up your first appointment with us, we will ask for a credit card number to confirm your appointment. We do not charge your card, but we do make an authorization. When you come in you can pay anyway you would like.  Out of courtesy to our practitioners and therapists, we have a 24 hour cancellation policy. If you need to change or reschedule your appointment please make sure you do so 24 hours prior to your appointment. We have an answering service and voicemail on 24/7 and we will acknowledge your cancellation.

How should I prepare?

We ask that you don’t eat anything one hour before your first appointment. If you want to do more in depth preparation, it would be advised that you reduce the intake of bread, pasta, rice and pizza, before the colonic. You might also want to add in some green juices mixed with some beet juice (2 part greens mixed with 1 part beet tend to work well for most)
